If you were an 80’s band that covered a sixties hit, and wanted to make a video to you you’re newer, darker version of the song,–what’s the obvious route to go? A GrecoRoman/Victorian/Preppy theme of course! You’re going to want to just mash different time periods up, and then have an obviously gay man taunt a midget/child while her possible father/possible lover looks on. Steal her food, point at her, flail around, then shower the tank of piranhas. The picture Soft Cell paints is certainly of tainted love, but it’s of a love so tainted, no one had imagined it previously or since. It’s the apple and the fish part that are most disturbing. -MG

You probably recognize this song. If you haven’t heard this version I’m sure you’ve heard the No Doubt version. Probably a few years back while you were shopping at the mall, or listening to a major radio station. I’m not sure what this video is trying to say though. I’m not really wanting to see an 80′s National Geographic special on animals across the globe. Plus on top of that you get scenes of the lead singer hanging out at a Zoo and singing away. And what the heck is going on with all those black squiggly lines on the screen? Oh and look at 0:18 it’s a black squiggly sperm moving around amongst some sort of wild animal herd. This video is way too 80′s and not in a good way. But this song is rad. -RC

I feel like the band members of the ridiculously named Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark are trying really hard here to look tough and romantic at the same time…and of course the only way to do that is by wearing brocade jackets and staring forlornly at the moon while playing music in a dark and crumbling back alley somewhere.  This video is hilariously cheesy and makes me laugh every time the guy earnestly punches through the fake brick wall, or when the owl flies by for no reason, or the keyboardist with the curly mullet gets really into it. It also happens to be the song from Pretty in Pink which explains why Molly Ringwold’s disembodied head is floating all over the place. It’s the only good thing to come out of that stupid Brat Pack movie where Ringwold was allowed to completely re-write who she was supposed to end up with, choosing the douchey rich kid who dumped her because of his friends over awesome and stylish Ducky who always loved her. So to recap; frustrating movie, terrible video, awesome song. – AS

As much as I genuinely love this song, the video is perfect. A lot of times I come on to this site and talk with vitriole about music videos and how MTv is a pile of shit. This time, I am sincerely excited about this song and this video. The video goes to prove that punk rock isn’t just about the bondage belts, torn jeans and mohawks. Of course, the titular character in the video has all of this, but the lead singer of the band is wearing blue jeans and a tucked-in button-down short sleeved shirt. The message is that punk is a mindset and it can be expressed in a multitude of ways. You don’t have to look like a punk to be one at heart. I appreciate this message and wish that the rest of the world could understand it. So world, I give you this song and video. Get into it. – JRN
