In which we pit two movies together using flickchart.com, debating their merits or lack thereof.
Both movies aren’t remembered fondly, if they’re remembered at all. Not that they’re hated, they’re both just vaguely forgettable. Maybe they’ll help you win a trivia question if it deals with naming a movie that Phillip Seymour Hoffman was the comic relief, or what movie had Batman and Wolverine at odds. But in the day-to-day life they’re generally not talked about anymore. I’d have to rewatch both to say whether or not that’s warranted or not, but I do know that The Prestige is often shat on in the realm of Christopher Nolan movies. As someone who has talked a mad amount of shit on his last two films (Inception and The Dark Knight Rises to date this article) I can say I didn’t really have a problem with the Prestige. It’s a fun and slightly silly scifi film that accomplished what it set out to do. It’s possibly the on break in Nolan’s career of taking himself absurdly serious, but that doesn’t mean it was awful. Twister also wasn’t awful, but all I can really remember is a cow in the tornado, and Bill Paxton screaming his love for Helen Hunt in the middle of the storm, which seems like an absurd time to do it.
One is an underrated scifi-action-thriller starring one of the most famous actors of all time, the other is an overrated comedy filled to the brim with stars because a lacking script is always saved by filling with as many names as possible. Minority Report is oft-forgotten, but is one of the best science fiction films in the 2000s. I’d say, of the top of my head/without doing any preliminary research, it’s in the top 15. Which is saying a lot, because there has been a fucking glut since Y2K. As a nation we have the future one the brain, and we’re seeing it unfold in front of us with electric cars and iPads. Without all the the futuristic gimmicks, Minority Report is a solid conspiracy thriller that’s entertaining to watch. Tropic Thunder is still overly quoted without any substance. Yes the message is movie stars are crazy pampered babies, but that’s not really a message we’ve need for the last 15-20 years. Pretty much got that update, we don’t need said stars slyly winking at us thinkg it’s charming that they think they’re crazy and pampered too. Fuck Tropic Thunder, seriously.
